Sotomayor urges anxious grads to embrace future

WASHINGTON — Justice Sonia Sotomayor says her first year on the Supreme Court has been a little like graduating from college: exciting, challenging and a little scary.

Sotomayor briefly addressed graduates of Howard University on Saturday after receiving an honorary law degree. She says she knows members of the class of 2010 may be a bit anxious about their future. But she says it’s all about “what you make of it.”

Sotomayor, the first Latina justice, also told graduates of the mostly black university that it’s now their turn to give back to society and urged them to strive someday to join her on the Supreme Court.

She did not speculate on who President Barack Obama might nominate to replace retiring Justice John Paul Stevens.
