Beverly Hills schools move to oust outside pupils

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — The Beverly Hills school district is prepared to boot about 10 percent of its student body after it ends a policy that allowed out-of-district enrollment.

The change is causing an uproar among the so-called “permit parents,” who mostly are reluctant to send their children to Los Angeles public schools.

The plan comes as the district switches to a budget plan financed directly by the city’s well-to-do tax base instead of with state money based on enrollment.

Parents want the school board to allow their children to finish their education at Beverly Hills, but school board Vice President Lisa Korbatov says the district will not be able to pay for outsiders without state funding.

The board will vote next month on the plan, which would affect nearly 500 students.
