Number of jobless graduates in Britain on the rise

LONDON - The number of graduates who don’t have jobs in Britain has been increasing and is at its highest in nearly two decades, a study has found.

About 21,000 of last years graduates, 8.9 percent, still had no job after six months, Daily Express reported Monday.

The study by the Higher Education Careers Services Unit said the figure was the worst since 1992-93, when 11.6 percent failed to find a job.

The public sector was one of the few areas that recruited more graduates. There was also a higher intake in retail and marketing, while those with law, geography and psychology degrees also did well in finding jobs.

But 16.3 percent of IT students had no job and others in electronics, engineering and architecture struggled to find work.

The units deputy research director, Charlie Ball, said: “Graduate unemployment hasnt risen as high as we feared. However, with the anticipated public sector job cuts, the medium-term looks less clear.
