Friends: Harvard student faces deportation from US
BOSTON — Friends of an undocumented Harvard University student say he is facing deportation to Mexico after being detained by immigration authorities.
Activists and friends say Eric Balderas, who just completed his first year at Harvard, was detained after he tried to use university identification to board a plane from San Antonio to Boston.
His friend Mario Rodas says Balderas was detained Monday and released pending a July 6 immigration hearing. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Mark Medvesky says he has no immediate knowledge of the case but any hearing for Balderas likely would be in Boston.
According to a Facebook page set up to highlight his case, Balderas was brought to the U.S. from Mexico by his family at age 4 and is studying neurobiology at Harvard.
