CBSE to issue more merit certificates this year

NEW DELHI - More merit certificates for the Central Board of Secondary Education Class 12 exams will be issued this year even though the overall pass percentage came down by 1.13 percent. The number of merit certificates increased by 60 percent compared to last year.
An official CBSE statement said that over 9,400 merit certificates will be given this year to toppers in various streams as compared to 5,712 issued last year.
“Don’t look at the quantity, look at the quality,” a senior CBSE official said, commenting on the drop in the pass percentage. “The number of merit certificates have increased, this is an achievement,” he said.
A total of 160 students have scored a perfect 100 in mathemathics this year. Fourteen students in physics, 56 in chemistry and 44 in biology have achieved the perfect score.
English core is the subject with the maximum number of merit certificates with more than 3,788 students scoring above 95 and five students scoring 100.
Those getting a perfect score in the humanities were fewer compared to those who took science. One student in history, three in political science and nine in economics got a perfect score of 100.
The CBSE Class 12 board exam results were declared for the Delhi, Guwahati and Allahabad zones at 8 a.m. Friday. The overall pass percentage was 79.87 percent compared to 81 percent last year. Results for Ajmer, Panchkula and Chennai region were declared Wednesday. A total of 689,361 students sat for the CBSE Class 12 exams this year.
