MISSISSIPPI (GaeaTimes.com)- The incidents of students running into conflict with school and college authorities over orientation related issues is nothing new in USA. In a similar incident that has made the Gay and Lesbian support groups upset, a school board based in Mississippi has canceled a high school prom as one of the girl students challenged its decision to prohibit same sex couples in the event. The student, Constance McMillen is obviously not amused with the decision taken by the board and the 18 year old lashed out at the board authority for its reaction. The board did not mention her as the reason for calling off the much anticipated prom event. Instead, it issued a statement that canceling the event became necessary as certain educational processes were getting disrupted.

Constance McMillen said in her statement that the step taken by the school board is nothing short of retaliation and it has shattered her dreams of taking her same sex partner to the prom. Besides, she also wanted to put on a tuxedo at the event. The student got the support of the American Civil Liberties Union and challenged the decision of the board following which it canceled the prom altogether. The student admitted that it would make her classmates dislike her as they would hold her responsible for the cancellation.

Constance McMillen also said that despite all this brouhaha and tension, she has got the unconditional support of her father. The event was supposed to take place on April 2. The student has also received support from a Washington based queer group named GLSEN.
