DC school evacuated for police helicopter landing

WASHINGTON — A helicopter from a suburban Washington police department made an emergency landing near a District of Columbia school, forcing its evacuation.

D.C. fire department spokesman Pete Piringer says the flight crew is being evaluated for injuries after the landing Thursday in a football field in Washington.

Piringer says the Prince George’s County, Md., helicopter was having mechanical trouble. Officials planned to have it land in the school yard at Davis Elementary in southeast Washington. The school was evacuated shortly before the landing as a precaution in case the helicopter crashed.

The helicopter didn’t make it to the school yard and landed in the field instead.
