KOLKATA - Ten students Tuesday broke their fortnight-long fast after Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee assured them that their demand to include the word madrasa in the name of Aliah University here will be fulfilled if her party comes to power in West Bengal.

The Pashimbanga Madrasa Students union has been demanding the inclusion of the word madrasa in the name of Aliah University since 2007. After their demand fell on deaf ears, the students decided to go on fast.

Ten students of the Union sat on fast from Dec 15 onwards over their demand.

Banerjee, the union railway minister, persuaded he students to break the fast after assuring them that the word madrasa will be included in the name Aliah University if her party comes to power.

The state government did not pay heed to your demand. But once our party comes to power in Bengal we will fulfill your demands, Banerjee said while interacting with the fasting students.
