University Of Kashmir VC Awarded Padmashri

KASHMIR, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- Riyaz Punjabi the Vice Chancellor of University of Kashmir has been conferred the coveted Padma Shri award on this Republic Day. The VC said in a speech that he got his inspiration from visionaries like Rabindranath Tagore and Jawaharlal Nehru. He said “I dedicate this award to the great minds of India like Rabindranath Tagore and Jawaharlal Nehru who have always been an inspiration for me”. The VC has a Doctorate in law and his career in research and academics spans over a period of 40 years. He has written six books so far and used to work as a professor Jawaharlal Nehru University’s Centre for the Study of Social Systems. In national as well as international journals he has contributed over 200 research papers till date. The colleagues of the VC are also elated at this development.
The Padma Shri award list included 83 persons this year and the Vice Chancellor of University of Kashmir was among them. He also refereed to the criticisms from several quarters on imposing restriction on student politics in the university and said given the gravity of situation it cannot be permitted by any means. He said the situation in Kashmir is far from normal and people who criticize from outside are not aware of the ground reality and allowing it may result in student unrest reaching gargantuan proportions. However, he hinted at the possibility of allowing it in future when the situation becomes normal.
The University of Kashmir Vice Chancellor said that he was delighted as his efforts were recognized. He said that the award is a big achievement in his career.
