NEW DELHI - About 100 students of the city-based Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), whose services were availed of during last year’s Commonwealth Games (CWG), are still waiting for their allowances which were promised by the government.

Many students said Saturday that they had worked for the Press Information Bureau (PIB) during the Commonwealth Games last year.

The students were told by the PIB that they would be treated as their paid staff and would be given an internship certificate and allowance of Rs.6,500 during the one-and-half month of their service in the department.

“Students who had worked with Doordarshan have been paid their dues, but more than 100 students who worked with the PIB are yet to get their internship allowance,” said an IIMC student on the condition of anonymity.

The students who have not received their allowances are from the Hindi journalism and advertising and public relation departments, a student told IANS.

Some of the students Friday held protest inside the campus and were assured that they will get the amount by next week.

“We earnestly devoted 11 to 12 hours during the games and worked for one and half months as volunteers. The amount due is Rs.6,500 per head. Our director Sunit Tandon has assured that we will get our allowance and certificates by Monday or maximum on Tuesday,” a student said.

The CWG Games were held in the capital Oct 3-14, 2010.
