Why unsafe Delhi schools not demolished, asks rights body

NEW DELHI - The Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR) has issued a notice to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), asking why there is a delay in demolition of 35 MCD school buildings that have been declared unsafe.

This, the commission said, was a violation of the Right to Education (RTE) Act. The DCPCR is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the RTE Act in Delhi.

“The commission has received information that some of these buildings had been declared dangerous two years back, yet the MCD engineering department has not responded to several requests from the education department,” a DCPCR official said.

“Taking a serious view of the matter, the commission has asked for an immediate action by the concerned authorities of the engineering department. It has also asked the civic authorities to submit a list of dangerous school buildings along with a detailed report,” the official added.
