Kerala to set up centres for disabled children

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM - Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will inaugurate activity centres for autistic and visually impaired children here Friday, an official said.

Kerala State IT Mission (KSITM) director Ishita Roy said Thursday that the activity lab for the autistic children and an audio library for the visually impaired would be inaugurated on the occasion of International Day for Disabled Persons.

The facilities are the result of initiative by INSIGHT, a joint project by KSITM and SPACE (Society for Promotion of Alternative Computing and Employment), conceived to empower the differently abled.

“INSIGHT was conceived and set up with an objective to assist the differently abled to be productive members of the society,” Roy said.

The audio library will have a collection of over 100 audio books in English and Malayalam. A vocational centre too will be set up with the aim of training visually impaired students.

INSIGHT has also partnered Indira Gandhi National Open University, whereby it would evaluate the performance of the trainees and award certificates.
