JODHPUR, RAJASTHAN (GaeaTimes.com)- The IIT Rajasthan has stepped up its endeavor to build three centers of excellence in Jodhpur for energy (solar), medicine & health and education. The reason of setting up these centers is the development of rural regions with low-cost technological innovations and research. In this context information and communication technology will play a crucial role. The IIT-R has joined hands with France for this project and France will also take part in faculty and knowledge exchange.
Professor Sudhir Sabbarwal of IIT-R said while speaking on the new initiative that it will enable the team to deliver really low cost laptops to the students in the rural region. Incredible as it may sound the cost of the laptops will not exceed INR 1500 says the professor. The half of the subsidy will be given by the center. During the regime of the previous government the project was conceived by the HRD ministry. A pilot project will be undertaken which will enable 100000 rural students to get the laptops across the country. Once this is over, mass production as well as distribution of these laptops will commence. These initiatives will enable the needy and poor students to avail the benefits of technology thinks the IIT team.
Since Solar energy is aplenty in this region a project will be undertaken to develop high-efficiency solar cells. The department of telecommunication will use these cells to meet the electricity needs in rural regions. A number of international and national agencies have expressed their will to collaborate with the IITs in India for developing similar projects.
