Delhi’s underprivileged get Aussie help

NEW DELHI - Inspired by the Commonwealth Games motto “humanity-equality-destiny”, the Australian athletes Friday donated Rs.4 lakh to NGOs working for Delhis underprivileged children before leaving for home.
The sum would be equally distributed amongst two NGOs — Asha and Katha. The former provides holistic care to a number of slum colonies across Delhi while the latter is into educating slum children.
After such an enjoyable time in Delhi, the Australian athletes were keen to give something back. We have worked with both Asha and Katha previously and know they do excellent work, said Australian High Commissioner Peter Varghese.
Both the NGOs thanked the athletes. It is so kind of the athletes to find time to collect this money in between their busy competition schedule, said Parvinder Kaur, assistant executive director, Katha.
Kiran Martin, founder and director of Asha, said: It is wonderful that the athletes came to this city of contrasts and havent forgotten those who are marginalised and excluded, she said.
The gift is in line with the spirit of the Commonwealth Games motto of humanity-equality-destiny, she added.
