LSR principal to be DU\’s first woman vice chancellor? (Second Lead)

NEW DELHI - Meenakshi Gopinath, principal of Lady Shri Ram College, may be the first woman vice chancellor of Delhi University. But the veteran educationist, who is also an India-Pakistan peacenik, said Thursday that she was not aware of the development.
Deepak Pental\’s five-year term as vice chancellor has ended, a senior university official said. \”From what we know, Meenakshi Gopinath will take over this month. It\’s not official yet.
\”It will be the first time ever the university will have a woman vice chancellor,\” the official told IANS. Pental succeeded Deepak Nayyar Sep 1, 2005.
Speaking to IANS, Gopinath said she not aware that she had been picked as the next vice chancellor. \”I came to know about the news through media reports. I have no information. It is all in air,\” she said.
As a peace activist, Gopinath over the years has been actively working for deepening people-to-people contacts between India and Pakistan.
