Anganwadi buildings only in northeast: Tirath

NEW DELHI - There are no plans for constructing buildings for anganwadi centers in regions other than the northeast, Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath said Monday.
“There is no provision for construction of anganwadi buildings except in the northeast States. In areas where public buildings are not available, there is a provision under the scheme for taking the accommodation on rent,” Tirath said in a written reply in the Rajya Saba.
The minister, however, urged the state governments to arrange resources for construction and and anganwadi buildings and amenities from various other funds like Backward Region Grant Fund, MP Local Area Development Scheme, MLA Local Area Development Scheme and National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.
The minister added that according to the reports received from the states, 52.34 percent of the anganwadis have drinking water facilities, 42.19 percent have toilet facilities, 26.11 percent have kitchens, 55.16 percent have cooking equipment and 19.99 percent have barrier-free access.
The minister said the ministry has sent a letter to the state governments to converge various flagship programmes focusing on drinking water “considering the close linkages between provision of safe drinking water, good sanitation and child health and nutrition”.
