KOLKATA, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com) - With the growing needs of the human race and the progression of the world towards development and urbanization, the environment is going towards a state of severe degradation. The increased use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, pollution, over-population, industrialization and inefficient waste management are some of the many factors, which are threatening the very existence of man-kind on earth. So there arises the need to study Environmental Science, which will make people aware of the present conditions and will teach them how to protect mother nature.

Environmental Science is the study related to the various aspects of environment. Environment is nothing but the nature that surrounds us and it is composed of Biotic(living) and Abiotic factors(non-living). It provides us with every resources that we need for survival. But in recent years the environment is going through a turmoil due to man’s over-utilization of resources and unsustainable growth of human development. The effects of such injudicious use of resources is that the environment is going through vast degrading changes in the form of global warming, ozone layer depletion and loss of natural resources. In today’s world study of environmental science has a vast scope. The growing needs of improving and protecting the environment has led to the growth of this field. It is matter of grave concern that scientists should adopt ways and means to develop eco-friendly ways to protect the environment.

There are many institutions across the country that offers BSc and MSc in Environmental Science. Some technical institutions offers MTech in environmental Science after Btech. There are also some short term courses such as a PG Diploma. At the top level there are doctoral and post-doctoral courses, such as M Phil, PhD in environmental sciences.

Graduates of Environmental Sciences can have multiple career options. They can work with various government departments and agencies such as forestry, environment, pollution control boards, urban planning, industry, water resources, agriculture, and various non-governmental organizations now working to protect the environment. Environmental Science includes job in the following aspects:

Environmental Systems Analysis
Environmental Monitoring and Modeling.
Environmental Engineering
Cleaner Production and the Water Cycle
Aquatic Ecosystems
Solid Waste Management

With the growing concern about our global warming and drastic climatic changes, study of Environmental Science will be a challenging and a growing field in the future.
