NC protesters march over school busing decision

RALEIGH, N.C. — About 1,000 people marched through North Carolina’s capital to protest a school busing policy that they say will lead to resegregation of area schools.

The march is a prelude to a Tuesday afternoon meeting of the Wake County School board. The board recently voted to scrap the district’s diversity policy. For years it had been a model for other districts looking to balance diversity in schools.

The head of the state NAACP, the Rev. William Barber, says he’ll show up at the meeting even though he has been banned from attending after he and three others were arrested there last month.

Barber is asking people who marched through downtown Raleigh to join him. The marchers carried signs with messages like, “Segregate equals hate” and “History is not a mystery. Separate is always unequal.”
