APME president to join Memphis university faculty

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Otis Sanford, opinion editor of The Commercial Appeal newspaper and president of the Associated Press Managing Editors, is in line to join the University of Memphis faculty.

University Department of Journalism chairman David Arant said in an e-mail that Sanford has been recommended for the Helen and Jabie Hardin Chair of Economics/Managerial Journalism. The Tennessee Board of Regents is considering the recommendation.

Sanford said if his appointment is approved he plans to continue his newspaper and APME work through the end of the year.

Sanford is a native of Como, Miss., and a member of the Ole Miss Alumni Hall of Fame.

He started working for The Commercial Appeal while in college and he has worked for newspapers, including The Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Miss., continuously since 1975.
