Sibal meets Rajasthan, Assam education ministers

NEW DELHI - In the series of meetings with states on implementation of the Right to Education Act, Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal Friday met education ministers of Assam and Rajasthan.
The meetings aimed at smoothening the implementation of the act.
In separate meetings, Sibal met Assam’s Gautam Borah and Rajasthan’s Bhanwar Lal Meghwal.
The HRD minister has already met education ministers from Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
The meetings are being conducted specially to evaluate the teacher-student ratio. The Right to Education calls for a ratio of one teacher every 30 students.
States are being asked to change their teacher recruitment policy and upgrade the school infrastructure to meet the provisions under the act.
States are also being asked to identify neighbourhood schools, as mentioned in the act.
“Right to Education cannot be implemented without cooperation of the state governments, so the HRD minister is meeting all state representatives to smoothen the way forward for the bill,” said an official from the HRD ministry.
“States have to identify the neighbourhood schools, and see that the schools function according to the provisions in the act,” he said.
