Court relaxes norms for Uttar Pradesh BEd entrance test

LUCKNOW - The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court Tuesday said graduates with at least 45 percent marks can appear in the May 5 BEd entrance examination for one lakh seats in universities and colleges of Uttar Pradesh.
The court stayed the Uttar Pradesh government’s decision to bar graduates with less than 50 percent marks from taking the entrance examination, officials said.
The order was delivered when the court was hearing a petition of Uttar Pradesh BEd Pravesharthi Sangharsh Samiti, an oganisation of BEd course aspirants, which questioned the minimum criteria for appearing in the examination being conducted by the Lucknow University.
The Lucknow University initially fixed 45 percent marks in graduation examination as the minimum eligibility for the B.Ed entrace test.
Last week, after a meeting with the officials of the state’s higher education department the varsity raised the minimum eligibility to 50 percent in graduation.
It also announced that the examination fee of candidates who had less than 50 percent in graduation would be refunded.
The court directives, lowering the minimum eligibility, is estimated to have provided a relief to about 1.50 lakh applicants.
The court has asked the Lucknow University and the state government to file their replies in the case within six weeks.
Around seven lakh graduates are expected to appear in the BEd entrance exam, officials said.
