Panama finds rifles, grenades at professor’s house
PANAMA CITY — Police in Panama say they have found an arsenal of assault rifles, grenades and almost a half million rounds of ammunition at the home of a Guatemalan-born sociology professor.
Professor Vinicio Jimenez of the Chiriqui regional university is under arrest following the raid on his home.
There is no information on why he had the weapons, but the Friday raid was carried out by police anti-drug units.
Police say the raid netted 47 assault rifles, 24 machine pistols, 487,900 rounds of ammunition and almost 4,000 grenades and grenade-style munitions.
The cache was found in Chiriqui, a province on the border with Costa Rica.
Such caches are rare in Panama. Guatemala is home to violent drug cartels and street gangs.
