Sikkim University Convocation 2010

SIKKIM (GaeaTimes.com)- The 226 graduate students from the first batch of Sikkim University got their degrees yesterday at a convocation that was attended by Pratibha Patil, the president of India. The university is the 23rd one in the country to be set up by a Parliament act on 2007. It started operating from the academic year 2008- 09. The main academic pursuit of Sikkim University is to take part in academic activities with a number of international institutions as well as universities and non government agencies. The president complimented the University for trying to give a momentum to the rich heritage of the Himalayan territory.
The president also said while attending the convocation of Sikkim University that the University shall try to present the great heritage of the region to the global community. She said that the university should set a trend for the youth by creating a garden replete with rare Himalayan herbs and plants. The biological diversity of Sikkim is almost unparallel and efforts should be made to preserve it. A lot of plants and tree species in the state are endangered and they need care.
At the convocation of Sikkim University the president also gave gold medals to three deserving students. They all did extremely well in their respective fields, she said while presenting the medals.The convocation also had M.K. Narayanan, the governor of West Bengal and Sikkim and Pawan Chamling, the CM of the state among other attendees. The president also said that the students passing out of the university should contribute towards the betterment of the state’s economy.
