NEW DELHI - At least 472,000 students appeared for the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) joint entrance examination (JEE), seeking a berth in over 15 top engineering colleges across the country.

“As many as 4.72 lakh students are giving the JEE as against 3.98 lakh students last year,” T.S. Natarajan, Organising Chairman of the JEE 2010 told IANS from Chennai.

The JEE-2010 is under the supervision of IIT-Madras.

The students are vying for around 10,000 seats at the B-Tech level at 15 IITs, Indian School of Mines (Dhanbad) and IT-BHU (Banaras Hindu University).

“Everything is going smooth and the candidates are giving their examination without any problem,” Natarajan added.

The results will be announced May 26.

The IITs will conduct online counselling for general category students May 27-June 9, a first of its kind initiative in the JEE history.

This is expected to destress students and parents who otherwise travel to different counselling centres for a choice of their institute.
