Student commits suicide in Mumbai, toll 10 in seven days

MUMBAI - A 16-year-old student committed suicide Saturday in Nehru Nagar suburb of north-east Mumbai, police said.
In a suicide note, Mary Jessica Nadar, student of Acharya College in adjoining suburb of Chembur, said she was ending her life as she was depressed after losing her father recently.
The girl’s father died a few weeks ago after which she had become withdrawn and isolated herself from friends and outsiders, a police officer said.
The loss of her father to whom she was very attached could have prompted her to take the extreme step, the officer said.
With this, the number of student suicides in the state in the past seven days has gone up to 10, of which eight were girls.
Three students ended their lives Friday - one each in Pune, Nashik and Mumbai.
Worried by the spate of students resorting to the extreme step of ending their lives, Chief Minister Ashok Chavan Friday announced a committee headed by the education minister to look into the matter and suggest remedial measures.
The earlier student victims are: Prajakta K. Kshatriya (21, Nashik), Vineet More (17, Mumbai), Vrushali Kale (18, Pune), Rupali Shinde (14, Thane), Reshma Dhotre (17, Mulund), Dhanashree Patil (19, Nashik), Bhajanpreet Bhullar (20, Mumbai, Powai), Sushant Patil (13, Dadar), Neha Sawant (11, Thane).
