In the present scenario of globalization where human beings are developing in every sphere of life. International relationships are also strengthened by the continuous effort of different Government and non- Government organizations. At this juncture, the recent attacks over Indian students in few states and territories of Australia is a matter of disgrace. Historical records suggest that from the end of Nineteenth century until 1974 Australian policy of preventing immigration by non-whites remained in force. At present, Australia is a developed country and is dominating in the field of agriculture, mineral products , wool production and in automobile engineering, which extends major influence on the global economy. It is regrettable that such a powerful nation with an efficient administration has failed to meet up with the unwanted incidents that has tarnished its image of a student-friendly destination.
As the spate of attacks on Indian students continues we have excerpts from the past to recollect. One of the leader of Indian community claimed that 20 shameful incidents of “carry bashing” occurred in Sydney in the last month. He also expressed the need to complain about such assaults to the concerned authority without fear. The term “curry-bashing” literally means assaulting and robbing an Indian. It is a local term of Australia related to the attacks on Indians by the local bullies.
A committee to facilitate the welfare and interest of Indian students was formed by the Indian consulate in Australia, headed by a cardiologist named Mr. Yadu Singh. He stated that almost 100 such attacks on Indian students took place during the last one year. More importantly he said to highlight the issue of such incidents to the concerned authority. In connection with these incidents, Mr.Singh commented that Indian students as outsiders are the weak and easy prey to the hate gangs. Mr.Singh also expressed that Indian students are forced to carry out late-night jobs to maintain their living and study expenditure in Australia. To avoid harming their permanent residency (PR) and confrontation they ignore to lodge any complain to the police. “So they will suffer the humiliation and the insult ….. and the criminals think that ‘We are pretty safe robbing them and nothing will happen’,” Singh said.
Australian administration has introduced some disciplinary rules for Indian students to maintain a balanced social structure compatible with Australian culture such as to moderate their social behavior and not to shout in Indian dialect publicly. Indian students would also be advised not to display wealth and laptops, ipods during night journeys. Melbourne has become the most targeted crime zones of such attacks, once which was a safest destination in the world. Melbourne police are taking preventive measures to handle the awkward situation. “They need to make sure they walk through a well-lit route, even if it might be longer, and they are not openly displaying signs of wealth with iPods and phones, and not talking loudly in their native language,” Inspector Scott Mahony of Melbourne Police has been quoted by The Age .
Singh also said he was aware of numerous robbings and random bashings of Indian students at night and in daylight, on trains and near their homes, often in western Sydney.
He referred to a Sunday night incident when a hospitality graduate, Rajesh Kumar, received 30 percent burns after a petrol bomb was flung into the Harris Park home that he shared with other Indians.
CONCLUSION
This is a burning issue, solution to stop it is practically difficult .Rules and restrictions are only theories. Many factors are connected with this crisis. Before it spreads into a bigger shape, some preventive measures are to be applied seriously. The small group of people active with these type of hooliganism are being thought by them as fun and achievement. Root cause of these type of activities is lack of education and sense of morality. Hence identification of both the groups culprits and victims are to be clearly pictured with accountability. Necessary restrictions, to be assured with stringent processes. Let us hope for immediate application of law and order from both sides of Nations so that this “Curry-Bashing” is completely wiped out. Lastly people’s minds need to be changed and developed. Imposing law does help to change and broaden the common men’s view. People’s mind and thoughts need to be thoroughly changed in a proper way then only peace will prevail all over this wonderful world.
