NEW DELHI - The Jamia Millia Islamia’s Maulana Mohamed Ali Jauhar Academy of Third World Studies Thursday organised a talk intended to promote better Indian understanding of Pakistan.

The talk on “The Idea of Pakistan in the Colonial Muslim Press (1932-1949)”, by Thierry DiCostanzo from the University of Strasbourg (France), was presided over by Professor Salil Misra from Indira Gandhi National Open University’s school of Social Sciences.

Jamia’s Vice Chancellor Najeeb Jung made the introductory remarks on the occasion at the event organised by the Pakistan Studies Programme.

“It was a very scholarly talk based on the empirical study of the Muslim League’s newspaper called the Star. Dr Thierry had very exciting methodological analysis, essentially theory based on this newpaper on the idea of Pakistan,” Ajay Darshan Behera, an associate professor at the academy, told IANS.

The talk witnessed active participation with debates on Dr Thierry’s methodology and interpretations.

The level of engagement grew rather intense, exceeding the time limit set for the event with a number of questions raised by the guests and participants.

In the past too, the Pakistan Studies Programme has organised similar programmes aiming to develop a greater understanding of Pakistan.
