KOLKATA - The La Martiniere for Boys school Thursday claimed that the human resource development (HRD) ministry has sought details of the three people who visited the school Wednesday claiming they had been sent by the ministry in connection with the investigations into the suicide of a student.

The HRD ministry has said that it did not send any team to inspect the school.

“On 24th June, 2010, we received a call from the Director, Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi requesting us to send them the details of the persons, who came to our school on June 23, 2010 and what transpired in the meeting with these persons, in connection with the investigation relating to Late Rouvanjit Rawla,” La Martiniere secretary Supriyo Dhar said in a statement.

The three - Ramesh Bhattacharjee, Anthony Arun Biswas and Dr Dilip Datta - visited the school claiming they have been asked by the ministry to review the case of alleged suicide by the Class 8 student Rouvanjit Rawla after he was given corporal punishment.

“The desired information has been sent to the Ministry of Human Resource Development,” Dhar said.

When IANS tried to contact Ramesh Bhattacharjee and Anthony Arun Biswas, their cell phones were found to be switched off. Calls to their land line numbers elicited response from family members that both were away from home.

The premier school of the city hogged the limelight after it was alleged that Rawla committed suicide after being caned by the principal Sunirmal Chakravarthi. Rawla’s father has lodged a complaint against the principal and four teachers

The state government has already announced that it would form an authority where students and their parents can express their grievances about schools and teachers.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights also conducted a probe and expressed dissatisfaction over the teaching environment in the school.
